Back in 2009, long before astro-tourism became a recognised niche, Bester began developing what he calls the High “5” Stargazing experience. His goal was simple but ambitious: to move beyond basic star identification and create a fully immersive, interpretive experience.

The Field Guides Association of Southern Africa—a body known for setting the benchmark for professional guiding standards—has increasingly recognised the importance of astronomy as part of a guide’s skill set. In 2025, this vision took a major leap forward when the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism launched a dedicated stargazing training programme for guides. The initiative reflects a broader national movement to position astro-tourism as a serious contributor to local economies.
Participants underwent intensive training covering:
- Constellation identification
- Planetary and deep-sky observation
- Cultural astronomy and indigenous starlore
- Guest interpretation and guiding techniques
This mirrors global best practice, where successful astro-tourism experiences combine scientific accuracy with compelling storytelling.
A Defining Moment
For Bester, being selected for this programme—and ultimately receiving his certification from Dr Ivan Meyer—was more than a personal achievement.
It marked the moment when years of passion became formally recognised expertise.
Today, he is the only FGASA-accredited stargazing guide in the Klein Karoo—a distinction that not only sets him apart but also elevates the region as a whole.
